Bennett offers alternative to potential challenger Shurtleff

By Andrew Adams

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Attorney General has received advice from Utah Sen. Bob Bennett as the race for Bennett's seat begins heating up.

Mark Shurtleff made headlines last month by announcing he may run against Bennett in 2010. He tells the Salt Lake Tribune that not long after that, he got a call from the senator. Bennett asked Shurtleff to serve as co-chair of his re-election campaign.

Shurtleff told Bennett he was honored, then asked him if it had anything to do with the news he may be a challenger.

Shurtleff says Bennett then told him he couldn't beat him, that he's no Chris Cannon. Former Rep. Cannon was defeated in the Republican primary last year.

Bennett has expected a challenge from within his own party and has already started aggressively running for re-election.

Shurtleff has been meeting this week with fundraisers in Washington D.C. and is considering family matters before announcing whether or not he'll run for Senate.

KSL'S calls to Sen. Bennett's office have not been returned.
