Drug rules prohibit reasonable disposal

Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff is telling Congress that federal regulations prohibit the commonsense disposal of prescription drugs, leading to an excess supply of medicine that is accessible to children.

Shurtleff was in Washington Thursday to testify before a U.S. House subcommittee holding a hearing on secure and responsible drug disposal.

In prepared testimony, Shurtleff says prescription drugs are too readily available to minors and end up on the black market. He says he supports a bill that would allow states to initiate take-back disposal programs.

Shurtleff says that in 2007, 317 people died in Utah as a result of prescription overdoses, nearly twice the number who died due to overdoses from traditional street drugs.
