Utah AG, running for Senate, opposes Sotomayor
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff says he would oppose the Supreme Court nomination of Sonia Sotomayor. Shurtleff, a Republican, is running for U.S. Senate against GOP Sen. Bob Bennett. Bennett announced his opposition to Sotomayor several weeks ago,
citing what he says is Sotomayor's tendency toward judicial activism. In a statement issued by Shurtleff's campaign Thursday, Shurtleff
says Sotomayor has demonstrated a cavalier attitude toward Second
Amendment rights. Both statements are designed to appeal to conservative state delegates who pick the Republican nominee. Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch also opposes Sotomayor's nomination. Copyright 2009 The Associated Press. All
